Wonder

Wonder Essay

By Spike Glyphs

Have you ever gotten a lesion, a laceration, or some sort of injury (minor cut) that everybody can't help looking at and they all ask, "What the heck happened to you?"(sassy girl)
After a few time-consuming days(days eating time) (or even worse, weeks), the injury goes away. No one asks you anymore about your cut. No one could have people looking at them like that every single day (evil eye) forever, right? Well, after reading the story Wonder by R.J. Palacio, I was proven wrong. If you were the kid in that book, you wouldn't feel good going to a school (puke) for the first time. I think the idea of Wonder is that no boy should be judged by their face or how they look.

Wonder is about a boy named August "Auggie" Pullman.(the season August) He was born with craniofacial syndrome. "Craniofacial syndrome refers to an abnormality of the face and/or the head. Craniofacial differences can result from abnormal growth patterns of the face or skull, which involves soft tissue and bones."* This makes his face deformed.(deformed face) Early in the story, August had to be homeschooled because he didn't want kids to make fun of him, stare at him, or scream and run away from him (horror movie). “But I know ordinary kids don’t make other kids scream and run away from them on the playground.”

Later in the story, August's mom suggests August to go to school at one of his only friend’s birthday party. August refuses (angry face).
Sooner or later after taking the tour of the school August's mom and dad sneakily (burglar) signed up for (AKA Beecher Prep.), (the beach) August wants to go to school. A kid named Julian teased him a lot during the tour, but he met a kid named Jack Will and thought he was funny and nice (awesome guy). His mom thinks he's joking, but August isn't.

At Beecher Prep, life isn't easy. If it means you're getting bullied, run away from, stared at, and gossiped about how ugly you are, you know you're having a bad time (south park meme). Just like August. Julian bullies August daily. August soon figures out that Jack Will’s name is actually Jack(light bulb). Jack is August's only
friend. Sooner or later, August meets a new friend named Summer. They make up a club called the Summer club. “No Winter people allowed!” Summer says. “Except for Jack.” August adds. They start sitting next to each other every day. August has a devastating break-up (girl breaking up with man) with Jack when Jack says that he would kill himself if he were August.(suicide) I think that Jack just wanted Julian to be his friend and August’s friend. Soon after, Julian teases Jack about being partners which results in punching Julian and knocking out a baby tooth. August and Jack get their friendship back after a series of text messages and apology letters. Jack says that he would kill himself if he was Julian.(suicide, again)

By the end, August stands up for himself.  When a kid named Eddie tries to hurt August and break his hearing aids, he runs.(run like the wind!) Later, he loses his hearing aids. Someone claims that maybe Eddie took it home as a souvenir(disney world). In Eddie's locker, August finds his battered (batter up) hearing aids. August insists not to get him in trouble. Soon after, he gets really popular and everyone in the school knows about him (popular boys). After that, he gets an award (olympic medal) for putting up with all of the bullying and beating. After all, he does have to go through middle school. And high school. And collage. And put up with all of that over and over again. It’s like the cycle of life, but instead the cycle of bullying.(cycle of everybody messing each other up)
