Wonder (if you don't like spoilers don't read this! duh.)

Have you ever gotten a cut or some sort of injury and when you go to school everyone stares at you and ask, "What happened to you?"
Well, usually after a few days or weeks, the injury is fully healed, and it's over. No one stares at you. But a kid named August, however, was stared at every single day.
August
He has craniofacial syndrome, which makes his face severely deformed. He goes through this all the time. He was home schooled because of his face. "I know ordinary kids don't make other kids scream and run away from you on the playground."
How would you imagine yourself as a kid with no friends, just because of your face. In this book, he had to overcome many challenges, starting with kids just looking at his face and getting bullied.
Via
She's August's sister. She doesn't have any type of problem or anything like August. She tries to protect August from anyone. August refers to her "a little too crazy", though. There's a point where she doesn't want him coming to a play she's doing at her school because she doesn't want her friends to see him and make fun of him.
Jack
Jack is August's only friend (besides Summer)during most of the book. Jack is very nice to August and is sort of like Via but not crazy. In one point of the book, Jack says that he would kill himself if he was August, which made August very mad. Sooner or later, August finds out that Jack was lying and they became friends again.
Julian and His Crew
These are the people that try to act cool with their "cool" friends. Also known as jerks. Sure enough, August gets bullied with Jack. A lot of his crew show up and help August. Julian then has almost no friends. His crew is gone. He gets pretty mad. And if you read The Julian Chapter, you'll get it.

August gets an award for character at the end of the book because he went through all that trouble and stayed strong. But there's still 6th grade. And the rest of middle school. And high school. And collage. And he's gonna have to go through all of it again.
